Hallow Nightmares: The Headless Horseman

This is my last build up (so far) of the GarageKit.US Halloween Nightmares line called “The Headless Horseman”. It depicts a delighted carrot top Halloweener who has absconded with the titular's character pumpkin head who's in hot pursuit.

This kit is extremely well cast and required very minor clean up of the approximately a dozen parts nicely detailed parts.

I had purchased all of the kits in the collection at once since, as I have mentioned, they are actually are a composite of a much larger scene. I did this because 1.) I had the cash and 2.) I wanted to paint all the bases with the same colors to present a unified color palette should I decide to display them all at once which, as it turns out, I did.

I pretty much followed the same color scheme (with some variation) as shown in the promo art for this kit. I decided to make this little gypsy trick'o'treater a freckle faced, blue eyed red head simply because I hadn't tried that skin tone in the past. I used Model Color Salmon Rose for the little girl's basic skin color along with burnt umber freckles applied with a paper clip. Her gypsy skirt was a craft paint iridescent red with a similar type of paint in purple for her belt. I used off white for her blouse with a string of iridescent white for her pearl necklace, both of which were also craft paint.

The headless horseman was also painted with craft paints, straight out of the bottle and copied the box art to a certain degree. The open neck wound was done in a very light gray with a wash of blood red which brought out the detail very nicely. The neck bone was done in a flat off white to make it more obvious.

If I had one complaint about this kit it would be the “Karloff/Lugosi” street sign (not shown). It fits nicely on the corner of the street however the pole is very thin and should have been cast with a wire in the center to avoid bending. Resin is very susceptible to heat and because this bad boy is a little top heavy, it leans over after a time if kept in a warm environment. I built this kit during a New England heat wave and this part just wouldn't stand straight no matter what I did.

This is kit is one of eight (so far) that is currently available and I enjoyed building them all. They vary in complexity with the “Bog Monster” being the more difficult in the set.
